5 Post-Hurricane Trailer Inspection and Repair Tips from PLM Maintenance
Hurricanes can wreak havoc not only on communities but also on the equipment that businesses depend on, including refrigerated trailers. After a storm passes, it’s important to ensure your trailers are inspected thoroughly to maintain safety and reliability. At PLM Fleet, we prioritize the integrity of your fleet and have compiled a checklist of essential maintenance tips for trailers impacted by hurricanes.
1. Keep Trailers Clear of Floodwater Zones
Whenever possible, ensure that all trailers are moved to higher ground to avoid exposure to rising floodwaters. Floodwater can cause serious damage to trailers and their components.
2. Check Hubs and Wheel Ends for Water Intrusion
After a hurricane, one of the most critical areas to inspect is the hubs and wheel ends. If your trailer has been exposed to flooding, water may have seeped into these components, leading to contamination.
3. Repack Contaminated Hubs and Wheel Ends
If you find any signs of water intrusion, it’s vital to disassemble, clean, and repack the hubs and wheel ends immediately. Contaminated grease can damage the bearings, leading to potential failures and costly repairs down the line.
4. Inspect the Exterior for Visible Damage
Hurricanes can bring flying debris, high winds, and heavy rain, which can cause exterior damage to the trailer. Carefully inspect for dents, tears, and other signs of impact or wear. Look closely at the roof, doors, and sidewalls for any structural damage that might compromise the trailer's integrity.
5. Inspect the Interior for Water Intrusion
The refrigerated trailer’s insulation and interior must remain dry to protect the cargo. Check the interior for any signs of water intrusion, including damp spots, mold, or warping. If water has entered, repairs must be made promptly to ensure temperature control is not compromised.
